The Royal Crescent

The Royal Crescent is a sweeping row of 30 townhouses that showcases 18th-century Georgian architecture in Bath at its finest. Built between 1767 and 1775, the crescent was designed by John Wood the Younger. Its golden-coloured brick facade against pristine green gardens emulates majesty and grandeur. Georgian Bath was a hotspot for high society – and the crescent was the most fashionable place to be. Today, the townhouses are privately owned and the large central house at number 16 is where you can plunge into paradise at the Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa. From luxurious rooms and a 5-star restaurant to saunas, steam rooms and special Relaxation Pool, it offers all comforts. It’s only a 15-minute walk away from the city centre – Pump Rooms, Theatre Royal, Roman Baths – which makes for easy exploring of the UNESCO World Heritage City. The crescent is also a top British filming location. You might be able to recognise this half-moon structure from films including Jane Austin’s Persuasion and Emmy-awarded Netflix drama Bridgerton -- home of the Featherington family. The No. 1 Royal Crescent Museum brings period drama to life. Discover Georgian ways of living as you wander through the dining room, parlour, bedrooms and more, complete with historic furniture and decor.

Bath Abbey

Surrounded by shops, the renowned Roman Baths and the Grand Pump Room of York Street – visitors are treated to another hotspot in the city, Bath Abbey. Built between 1499 and 1616, the Abbey offers awe-inspiring architecture, services and weekly choir performances. It’s a peaceful spot to enjoy in the heart of the city. The west facade of the abbey is adorned with angels climbing ladders – some of them are even upside down. Let the climbing angels tempt you to ascend the 212 steps of the Abbey Tower. You’ll get a glimpse of the 10 bells, clock face, and a panoramic view of the honey-coloured city. Inside, look up to see the fan-vaulted ceilings, 635 memorials and the Klais organ. Concerts are a wonderful way to listen to its 4,000 pipes fill the air. Admire the King Edgar Window where Edgar the Peaceful was crowned the first King of England in a coronation that’s not changed since. Spend time near The Great East Window with looming 56 scenes telling the story of Jesus – that’s a lot of stained glass. Pick something up from the Abbey shop before you leave and enjoy the festive activities throughout the year. Christmas offers carol services, festive tours and family-friendly activities.

Pulteney Bridge

Arching over the River Avon with top-class views of the weir, Pulteney Bridge is a great place to stroll, shop and sight-see. The bridge stretches from Argyle Street and Bridge Street and is completely lined with quaint shops and cafes – a unique feature of only a handful of bridges in the world. Take your time to see them all. Coffee shops offer sweet treats and refreshments for hungry visitors. Built in 1774 and designed by Scottish architect Robert Adam, the bridge is a fine example of Georgian architecture – with hints of Palladian architecture mirroring Italian bridges such as the Ponte Vecchio. It’s no surprise Pulteney Bridge is one of the most photographed locations in the city. You might also recognise it from the Oscar-winning musical film Les Misèrables – incredible scenes were shot in Bath. As you walk over the bridge, you’ll see the mesmerising horseshoe-shaped Pulteney Weir. It was built to prevent the river flooding. You can try paddleboarding, canoeing, and kayaking on the river. You can enjoy the best views of the bridge by walking along the riverside, from Parade Gardens or on Pultney Bridge cruises – the boats glide under the bridge too.
