Place Massena

The timeless quality of Nice’s main square – with an exciting buzz of restaurants and people – will draw you back to Place Massena time and time again. Situated between the old and newer parts of the city, from the square you can hit the shops on Avenue Jean Médecin, wander into the Old Town or head to the beach. It’s a perfect base for any itinerary. Characterised by striking Italian buildings and checkerboard tiles, the square is a funky mix of colours, architecture and artwork. Don’t miss out on the intriguing The Seven Statues. Seven figures sit high up on poles and represent the seven continents. It’s great to visit in the evening when they’re lit up in different colours. Weave your way through crowds and street performers to the main spectacle of Place Massena, the Fountain of the Sun. Snap a selfie with the statue of Apollo and chill out among the other locals who use this area as a meeting point. East of the square is where you can find a large park featuring the unmissable Water Mirror where children and adults can splash around in the sprays.

Cours Saleya

At the heart of Vieux Nice – the Old Town – Cours Saleya is the gorgeous setting of vibrant markets from flowers, food to antiques and artisan goodies. The flower market is the shining jewel of Cours Saleya and has been in action for over 120 years. Take in the explosion of bright colours and scents as you stroll among sunflowers, lilies and roses. Surrounded by historic buildings, bars, restaurants and the turquoise sea only across the road – it’s ranked among France’s 100 most picturesque markets. Under brightly striped awnings, seasonal Mediterranean fruit and vegetable stalls offer seasonal produce along with dried fruits, nuts, olives and spices. Don’t miss out on some local street food while you’re here too – the Niçois speciality ‘socca’ at Ches Thérésa. It’s served in a paper cone if you want to eat this tasty chickpea flatbread on the go. On Mondays, Cours Saleya gives way to an antique market. Enjoy the buzz of local chatter as you browse pottery, paintings and jewellery. From June to September, on your way to dinner, stop by the evening crafts market. Whether you want to pick up a bouquet, snap some photos, or listen to the street musicians – Cours Saleya captures the Nice’s soul.

Promenade des Anglais

Known to locals as ‘the Prom’, this waterfront walkway treats visitors to endless views of Nice’s turquoise-meets-sapphire seas and is a city hotspot. It’s lined with palms and stretches around the whole Baie des Anges, Angels Bay – with many lido entrances that’ll tempt you for a dip or something to eat. Soak up the buzz of activity from street artists to runners and skaters or sit down on an iconic blue chair watching the world go by. Keep an eye out for some of the promenade’s famous sculptures and landmarks including Hotel Negresco and a public park. Don’t forget to snap a selfie at the ‘I love Nice’ sign for happy memories strolling along the Promenade des Anglais.
