Holyrood Park
Cherished by locals and visitors alike, Holyrood Park is a city park like no other. It’s made up of three lochs, vast green plains and the dramatic Salisbury Crags which shape the city’s skyline. Whether you’re conquering Arthur’s Seat – the park and city’s highest point – or munching on a picnic on its grassy banks, it’s hard not to fall in love with this haven of tranquillity in the heart of Edinburgh.Holyrood Park is just a few minutes’ walk from the city’s old town, yet a world away from the hustle and bustle. Nearby are the ruins of Holyrood Abbey and the famous Palace of Holyroodhouse – meaning you can tick off a few sights in one go. The park, which dates back around 350 million years, is a popular meeting point for locals and a great place for a relaxing stroll. In fact, there are a few different walking routes and peaks to climb, like the iconic Arthur’s Seat – an extinct volcano, older than the city itself. According to local folklore, it was the site of King Arthur’s palace and the scene of many battles. On your way back down, you can visit St. Anthony’s Chapel, a 14th-century hermit’s cell used by pilgrims for many centuries.Birdwatching is popular at Duddingston Loch, which lies at the south of the park. The Clydeside Distillery
Calling all whisky lovers. Glasgow’s Clydeside Distillery offers a complete whisky tasting experience with an exclusive behind the scenes tour, taking you through the whole production process. You’ll learn about the history of the spirit, see distillation in action and taste your way through different whiskies.Launched in 2019, the well-known whisky producer has already made history in Glasgow – being the city centre’s first operating distillery in over 100 years when it first opened. Set in a former pump house on River Clyde, it offers a variety of tours which will have you feeling like a whisky brewing pro. You'll learn the techniques used to produce a high-quality whisky, from the milling of the grains to the distillation and aging of the whisky.One of the highlights of the tour is a visit to the copper pot stills, where you’ll learn about the refining process and get a chance to see the stills in action. After the tour, you'll get to sample some of the distillery’s very own single malt whisky, which is produced on-site. But that’s not all. You can also grab a drink and enjoy the view from the distillery’s rooftop terrace overlooking the River Clyde – a great spot to enjoy a cocktail or a whisky neat.
Princes Street
Retail therapy is on the cards at Princes Street, as well as a variety of eateries and views of Edinburgh's Old Town and Castle on Princes Street. Originally built as a residential street in 1770, it has since made way for retail and hotels, separating the Old Town from the New Town. High street brands, department stores and places to refuel your energy line its northern side and if shopping isn’t your thing – browse the art galleries and Princes Street Gardens on its south side. Take photos of the floral clock and Ross Fountain with impressive backdrops of Edinburgh Castle. The beautiful gardens offer all-year-round fun from beer tents popping up for Oktoberfest celebrations to charming Christmas market stalls.
Scott Monument
Standing proudly in Princes Street Gardens, the Scott Monument is one of Edinburgh’s most iconic landmarks. The 61-metre-high Gothic memorial – built in honour of the much-loved Scottish author, Sir Walter Scott – is one of the tallest monuments dedicated to a writer. Inside, there’s an exhibition where you’ll be able to learn about the life and legacy of the writer. A climb to the top guarantees sweeping views over Edinburgh and beyond.Built between 1840 and 1844, the striking monument is known for its sharp black arches which dominate the city’s skyline. Marvel at the 68 intricately carved figures depicting characters and scenes from Scott’s novels. If you have time, conquer the 287 steps to the top of the tower and see the city from a new perspective – tiring yet rewarding. The monument was designed by George Meikle Kemp and showcases remarkable architecture. At its base, there’s a large marble statue of Scott with his beloved dog, Maida. If you decide to climb the tower’s spiral staircase, there are a series of viewing platforms for stopping and resting while taking in the views. A literary beacon like no other.
