Phoenix Park

In a city famed for its green spaces, the Phoenix Park is the mother of them all. It’s so big that you could be forgiven for thinking you’re in the countryside – and that’s without factoring in the herd of will deer that roam the park. What's more, Dublin Zoo is located in the park. There’s also Europe’s biggest obelisk – the Wellington Monument – a star-shaped magazine fort, a gigantic cross and Áras an Uachtaráin, the residence of Ireland’s president.

Saint Stephen's Green

As both Dublin’s lung and beating heart, St Stephen’s Green holds a special place in the affections of Dubliners. Feeding the ducks in the pond is a rite of passage, while a selfie on the romantic bridge on every visitor’s tick list. Then there’s the history, personified in the statues of historic figures and the Fusiliers’ Arch entrance gate. And across the road from the greenery are emblematic spots such as the Huguenot Cemetery, Iveagh House – a former residence of the Guinness family – and ivy-clad Georgian townhouses.

National Gallery of Ireland

A small museum with a big reputation, the National Gallery of Ireland is one of Dublin’s most popular attractions. And it’s more than just a place to visit on a rainy day. It is located next to the Irish parliament in the elegant Georgian period Merrion Square, opposite the statue of Oscar Wilde. There’s an eye-catching collection of important works by Irish artists such as Jack B. Yeats, William Orpen and Mainie Jellett as well as international masters of great renown – Caravaggio, Picasso, El Greco, Rembrandt, Velazquez and Degas, among others. Caravaggio’s The Taking of Christ, one of the star attractions, was discovered in the dining room of a nearby home for priests in 1990. The gallery also puts on an annual display of watercolours by J.M.W. Turner. Because of the fragility of the paintings, they go on view in January only, when natural light is most limited.
