La Città delle Arti e delle Scienze di Valencia è un complesso unico dedicato alla divulgazione scientifica e culturale, che si compone di cinque elementi principali: l'Hemisfèric (cinema IMAX e proiezioni digitali), l'Umbracle (punto di osservazione paesaggistico e parcheggio per auto), il museo delle scienze Principe Felipe (un centro innovativo della scienza interattiva), l'Oceanográfico (tra i più grandi acquari d'Europa, con oltre 500 specie marine) e il Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía (che si occupa del programma operistico). L'Ágora fornisce al complesso uno spazio multifunzionale.Situato nel letto prosciugato dell'antico fiume Turia, a metà strada tra il centro storico di Valencia e il quartiere costiero di Nazaret, la Città delle Arti e delle Scienze si estende su una superficie di 350.000 metri quadrati. L'Hemisfèric (Planetario) è stato il primo elemento ad essere aperto al pubblico nel mese di aprile del 1998. Il museo delle scienze Principe Felipe ha aperto nel 2000, l'Umbracle (parcheggio coperto) nel 2001 e il Palacio de las Artes nel 2003. Housed inside Valencia’s Colegio del Arte Mayor de la Seda (The College of High Silk Art) is the city’s prestigious Valencia Silk Museum. The Valencia Silk Museum is dedicated to documenting and detailing Valencia’s rich history and legacy of silk. Visit the museum to learn about how silk first came to Valencia, why its production rose to prominence, and how it's made. You can also admire the museum’s vast collection of antique silk looms and garments.The silk industry played an essential role in Valencia’s commercial activity for several centuries. Valencia’s silk industry initially exploded in the 15th century, with a large portion of the population being employed in the production of the luxurious material. The building in which the museum is located, the Colegio del Arte Mayor de la Seda, dates back to the 15th century and was declared a national historical monument in 1981. Inside the historic building, we recommend visiting the Hall of Fame (El Salón De La Fama), the main room where the institution’s leaders used to meet. The room has an impressive ceiling fresco by renowned Valencian painter José Vergara and an elaborate ceramic floor designed to represent the four continents known at the time. Originally built in the 13th century on the site of a former mosque, the Santos Juanes Church is one of the oldest churches in Valencia, Spain. This historic Roman Catholic church is also popularly known as the San Juan del Mercado Church due to its location next to the city’s Central Market. The Santos Juanes Church is distinguished by its Baroque facade, central clock tower, and large ceiling frescoes. On the outside, you’ll see a prominent image of the Virgen del Rosario and statues of Saint John the Baptist, Saint John the Evangelist, Saint Francesco Borgia, and Saint Luis Bertrán, while the interior contains elaborate frescoes by Spanish painter Antonio Palomino.The Santos Juanes Church has been reconstructed various times throughout the years due to numerous fire accidents. The church was first built in a Gothic style and subsequently restored with a Baroque aesthetic, thus resulting in its current architectural blend of Gothic and Baroque styles. The building was officially declared a National Historic and Artistic Monument in 1947.
