Vieux-Lyon (Lyon Old Town)
Lyon’s Old Town, called Vieux-Lyon in French, is one of Europe’s largest Renaissance neighbourhoods. Vieux-Lyon is most famous for its narrow cobblestone streets, colourful historic buildings, and secret passageways known as traboules which are scattered throughout it. Visit this neighbourhood to get a real taste of old France.Vieux-Lyon can be split into 3 districts: Saint-Jean, Saint-Paul and Saint-Georges. In particular, we recommend you walk around Rue Saint-Jean to see the medieval Saint-Jean Cathedral and explore the nearby restaurants, shops, and traboules.Vieux-Lyon has been designed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. This historic part of town is located between Fourvière Hill and River Saône in central Lyon. Although some may appear underwhelming, the buildings in this area date back to the Renaissance era and tend to hide elaborate interiors and stunning courtyards.
La Croix-Rousse, Lyon
Work hard and play harder is a motto that is lived and breathed in the neighbourhood of La Croix-Rousse in Lyon, France. Located on a 254-metre-tall hill between the Saone and Rhône rivers, La Croix-Rousse has a distinctively bohemian culture and vibe that sets the neighbourhood apart from other parts of Lyon, with some residents even choosing to refer to themselves as Croix-Roussians.Thanks to the central role Lyon played in France’s silk industry, La Croix-Rousse is home to many houses that were formerly used as workshops for silk weaving. Place Bellecour
Some might say “all streets lead to Place Bellecour” in Lyon, France. Place Bellecour is a historic city square located in the heart of Lyon, and it often acts as a meeting place, an event space, or a starting point for exploring the city.Considered the largest pedestrian-only open square in Europe, Place Bellecour measures 312 metres by 200 metres. The square plays a central role in Lyon’s social life. Place Bellecour is also part of a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.You’ll find several sculptures In Place Bellecour, including an equestrian statue of King Louis XIV, as well as several monumental buildings lining the square. Depending on the time of year of your visit, you may even see a Ferris wheel which is installed in the square during the winter.
Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon
The Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon, also known in English simply as the Lyon Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic church of major historical significance in Lyon, France. Conveniently located in the heart of Lyon’s old town (Vieux Lyon), this medieval cathedral consistently impresses tourists and locals alike with the large rose window on its facade, its stunning interior filled with intricate altars and stained glass windows, and the famous 14th-century astronomical clock held inside.The Lyon Cathedral took approximately 300 years to complete, with construction taking place from 1180 to 1476. Dedicated to Sain John the Baptist, the cathedral was build primarily in a Gothic style with touches of Romanesque architecture. It is also the seat of Lyon’s Archbishop.
